Maura Sullivan is a Marine Iraq War Veteran, Granite Stater, former senior Obama Administration official, and mother of three running for Congress in New Hampshire’s First District to bring a new kind of leadership to Congress.
Both of Maura’s grandfathers fought in World War II, and her grandmothers were leaders in Jesuit education. Inspired by their example, Maura’s parents instilled in their children the value of service and raised them to be men and women for others.
Maura worked her way through college at Northwestern on an ROTC scholarship and by waiting tables before being commissioned in the Marines. After her initial contract ended, she volunteered for deployment to Fallujah, Iraq. There, she saw how out-of-touch leadership in Washington failed an entire generation and working-class men and women paid the price.
That failure shaped her life, and deepened her resolve to continue serving our country. After returning home, she earned graduate degrees in business and public policy from Harvard and worked at PepsiCo in New England.
In 2014, outraged by the crisis at the VA that left fellow veterans dead while waiting for care, Maura again ran toward the fight. She was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as Assistant Secretary at the VA, where she worked to improve timely access to quality health care for fellow veterans. Later, at the Pentagon, she held senior roles focused on strengthening our national security and supporting military families.
Following the Obama Administration, Maura worked in the private sector as a health tech executive, helping to keep children safer in schools during the COVID-19 pandemic and improve access to diabetes treatment for fellow veterans. She has also remained deeply involved in her community, serving on Congressman Chris Pappas’s Service Academy Nomination Board, helping elect strong grassroots leaders across the state as Vice Chair of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, and volunteering with City Year New Hampshire helping to strengthen Manchester schools and grow the next generation of servant leaders.
Maura lives on New Hampshire’s Seacoast with her husband, Marc, a Navy Reserve Officer, and their three children.
